Creighton, Creighton
Creighton was on my mind today. First it was the fact that he is 5 years old. He is still just a baby to me. And,as of last night he has been invited and joined an 8&U traveling baseball team. He is the youngest on the team. He will be 6 when they play their first game next spring.
Last summer when we were approached about this same thing by some coaches in this organization, I was the first to say 'no way. he is too young.' But, I have since had a change of heart. After weighing the pro's and con's we have decided that this will be best for him in the long run. He played t-ball last year as it was the only thing a 5 year old is eligible for. There were several other parents that complained that he shouldn't be in t-ball. That he was going to hurt someone. My gosh, it wasn't my fault that the kid can crush the ball and your kid didn't pay attention and got hit in the face :) He was 5 just like all the other kids. He just had a little more passion for the game than the others and has been hitting a live pitch since he could walk :)
So, after being approached again and giving it some serious thought we decided that since his true love is baseball that we might as well start him out on the right foot, with the right coaches, receiving proper instruction and playing with kids that are better than him. I think it will give him a better understanding of the game and something to work hard for. He is young, very young. I am sure that he will see a lot of bench time. But, this is what we have chosen and he was all for it.
I know many will say the same thing I said in previous months 'he is too young'. But, we believe that he will do just fine. Even if he does spend the first year doing a whole lot of practicing and then sitting on the bench looking so cute in his uniform :)
